The US central bank reduced borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second rate cut in the current year amid economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.
Move Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank
The move to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with persistent inflation.
Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Shifts
In a statement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the release reads. “Price increases has risen and remains moderately high.”
Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job
The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Gathering of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.
Information Shortage Affects Monetary Moves
The Fed usually studies labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, including the count of new jobs created to the market and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in August.
The number of jobs added to the economy in the summer month was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.
Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Decline
Though BLS was scheduled to release September’s job market report in early October, it suspended its release once the shutdown started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported earlier this month that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand positions in September, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.
“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman said recently, a trend he had earlier said comes from trade and immigration measures.
Price Data Shows Moderate Rise
Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the agency still issued its inflation report for last month that indicated that prices are going up, although gradually. Prices increased 3% over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
