Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have joined forces with France's air force in a joint strike on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory operated by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The location, pinpointed through surveillance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountains just above the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a series of entry passages providing entry to the facility... early reports are that the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the strike late on Saturday and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as Daesh - established extremist governance over parts of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation demonstrates our UK leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eradicate any re-emergence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.

RAF aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of the group subsequent to its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank every member of British forces participating in this operation for their skill and their bravery," he added. "Including them were thousands of British troops deployed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to take out militants who pose a risk to our safety, highlights how our armed forces are always on standby, all year round, keeping Britain secure domestically and influential overseas."

During December, the American forces carried out what it termed a "massive strike" on Daesh sites in the country, subsequent to an assault killed two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. says IS still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
