Whenever a major honors show approaches, one notices a clamor for introducing of new categories to honor unsung work and satisfy the spirits of fans dedicated to specific genres.
Another commentator has already made for a horror game category. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are tabletop games, which is someone's personal cause. However, I must insist when I prioritize just as with other blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand is the most urgent above others. Here's the proposal: There should be a category for puzzle games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise for the industry of video games, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.
For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these six categories successfully include a lot of ground, allowing placement for most games within them.
This doesn't apply to puzzle games. No suitable classification appears to put them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. What category would fit them among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Recognition Challenges
Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, except when they manage to fit award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.
- One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated completely that year
- Another creative title was excluded in 2019
- Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment recently
- Just some logic titles managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications
Value of Brain-Teasers
These are often small games, but the art in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games rank among most engaged experiences worldwide continuing this trend for many years.
The legendary block-stacking game rivals famous sandbox experiences competing to become best-selling game of all time; it also contends for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.
Proposal and Rationale
Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent so many good games out.
To emphasize again, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories in important events. Brain-teaser creators operate at the hard edge interactive creation, developing some of essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait generations.
